Treatment

Treatment for lumbar instability may depend on whether the instability is passive (mechanical) or active (functional). Strength training of trunk extensor muscles can be considered as part of functional treatment (Davarian et al. 2012). Patients can use core training exercises to maintain strength in the lumbar area using techniques such as Pilates or McKenzie. In the case of a passive instability, the underlying cause of the instability must be treated.
